Easy Bijou Cocktail Recipe Video

Video Transcript

Hi, guys, thanks for joining me on my cocktail vlog. Today, I’m going to show you how to make a Bijou. This cocktail dates back to the late 1800s. The word bijou is a French word that means jewel, so it’s the jewel cocktail. And today I’m just going to use equal parts, nice, simple recipe, but then, again, experiment with the ratios to find out what you prefer.

So the first ingredient we’re starting with is a gin, so today I’m using Antipodes. So a single shot, 30 mills, and then add that into your mixing glass. There’s a lot of herbs and spices in this cocktail, really flavorsome, and it’s going to be quite a savory cocktail. So another single shot. And then next, we’re going to rein in because these other ingredients…obviously, you’ve got a gin sit around 40%, you’ve got your chartreuse which is really full-on 55%, and then we’ve got a sweet vermouth just to kind of rein it back in. So a single shot, 30 mills, and add that to your mixing glass. And last of all, two dashes of orange bitters. I’m using Regan’s No. 6.

And pour your mixing glass with ice and stir for about 25 seconds. And using your julep strainer, strain into a chilled glass. Then garnish with a skewered lemon peel with a maraschino cherry. And there you have a Bijuou. Cheers.

There’s a lot going on there. A lot of savory flavors. Any time you make a cocktail with chartreuse, it kind of takes over, but this works really well. If I was to make it again, I’ll probably maybe lower that chartreuse content a little bit and then increase probably the gin, maybe even the sweet vermouth to add a little bit of sweetness to it. Very herbaceous. Definitely something you could sit down and sip on. This is actually the first time I’ve tried a Bijou as well so overall I’m pretty happy with that. Cheers.
