Vincenzo: Hi, and welcome to Vincenzo’s Plate. Where are we today?
Giuseppe: Well, Aperitivo in Leichhardt.
Vincenzo: Fantastic. The place to be to eat Italian food. So what are we gonna do today, Giuseppe? Surprise us with a beautiful cocktail.
Giuseppe: Surprise you? Well, I was surprised when I got first asked to make this cocktail when I was working many years ago in Italy in a bar in Calabria, Bianco. I had a group of guys who used to come to the bar daily, and they used to ride their Lambretta, it’s like a Vespa or a motorscooter.
Vincenzo: Well, I think Lambretta is even nicer than Vespa, much nicer.
Giuseppe: Much nicer, that’s the best way to explain how it is.
Vincenzo: Yeah.
Giuseppe: And when these guys came to the bar and one liked limoncello, one liked Frangelico, one liked white wine. And they said to me, “Please, make us something that we can, you know, have.” And I thought, “What am I gonna make? What am I gonna make?” And I thought, “Okay, they make their own limoncello at this bar. They make their own white wine.” I said, “Leave it to me,” and I had the inspiration from their Lambrettas that they used to park at the front. And hence, the name is called Lambretta.
Vincenzo: Lambretta cocktail by Giuseppe.
Giuseppe: Yeah, Lambretta cocktail by Giuseppe.
Vincenzo: Nice.
Giuseppe: Now, for the Lambretta, I like to use a classic champagne glass. Now, fill it up with ice just to chill a little bit, okay? So while you’re making the cocktail. So we fill it up with ice, the usual. Limoncello, we’ll take 30 mil of limoncello. Now, next one is white wine, and I use an Italian white wine, a pinot grigio, so 30 mil of pinot grigio or white wine or whatever you can get hold of. Now, Frangelico. Everyone loves Frangelico.
Vincenzo: You know it’s the most loved drink here in Australia, Italian drink?
Giuseppe: I understand why. Perfect, it’s the perfect digestivo. You know, you can have it afterwards. So 15 mil of Frangelico. Next, we get 15 mil of fresh lemon juice, so just squeeze a lemon, the juice from the lemon, and a dash of sugar syrup.
Vincenzo: How can you make sugar syrup? How do you make it?
Giuseppe: So it’s just sugar, water, and reduce it over, a sauce.
Vincenzo: Ah, quick, that seems easy, sounds easy.
Giuseppe: Okay, next step, we’ll take and remove the ice from our glass so it’s nice and chilled. And we grab our trusty shaker.
Vincenzo: Look at the face, look at the face. Look at his face. Yeah, yeah.
Giuseppe: The harder you shake it, the better it tastes. Okay, because of the lemon juice, we use a double-strainer. So just in case there’s any pips or anything in here.
Vincenzo: Mm-hmm, that’s quite thick.
Giuseppe: And now, the finishing touch is we take a lemon rind, twist it, wrap it around the rim, and sit it inside.
Vincenzo: Beautiful. Love it.
Giuseppe: And this is called the Lambretta.
Vincenzo: Hello, Lambretta, you’re about to come in my stomach. But to go with this beautiful Lambretta cocktail, we need to have some breadsticks, some olives because, like we said, this cocktail is from Calabria, made in Calabria.
Giuseppe: Made in Calabria.
Vincenzo: It’s all about fresh flavors, homemade things. And you need to make also the arancini, so you can watch the video up here to make arancini.
Giuseppe: Perfect, I’m glad you like the cocktail. I was very scared when I first made it. All these guys, they came in on their Lambretta and waited for me to make this cocktail. And when they tried it, they loved it, and they came back every day. And now you can find it here at Aperitivo.
Vincenzo: Oh, wow, what about the cafe? Do they still have this?
Giuseppe: Yeah, they still got it there.
Vincenzo: Well, thank you, guys, for watching this episode. We will see you in the next Aperitivo with Vincenzo’s Plate video. Allora si mangia.
Giuseppe: Si, belle.
Vincenzo: Vincenzo’s Plate.
Giuseppe: Salute.
Vincenzo: Salute. Oh, wow, wow.
Giuseppe: Sweet, huh?
Vincenzo: Terrific, ah. Guys, what are you waiting for? Make this at home, or, if you’re in Sydney, come here.
Giuseppe: Come here, and I’ll make it for you.
Vincenzo: Mm, fantastic.
Giuseppe: You like that?
Vincenzo: Yeah, oh, you have to try this really.
